Driving test for seniors unfair

Dear Editor,

I have had the privilege of having a drivers license for more than sixty-five years. I have had no infractions. I admit I have made a few driving mistakes, but I respect the laws of the road.

Our government has put anyone who requires a medical, in a sting position. My drivers license came due on October the 1st and I was asked to take a medical. My family doctor was not available so I had to see a fill-in doctor. My health and eye tests were good. I was then asked to take a test (I should have walked out then). The test I was given was unfair and I am sure 90 per cent who took this test failed – SIMARD MD drivable assessment test. I do not know why our government would do this to the seniors who built our country and made it their home. One of the questions in the test she read off was a list of twelve items. She then asked me to repeat them AFTER asking me other questions in between... I failed. I gave this test to several young people, only one got five right.

When you go for a medical you are already under stress, this is humiliating and cruel.

I then went to Edmonton to take a test on a computer, since my computer skills are questionable.... I failed.

If I would have passed that test, I would have had to take a drivers test in Edmonton, I have no choice.

The questions on the computer are very fast – this cost me $236.

I heard a lady on CHED radio talking about this test and she said it was a cruel thing to put seniors or anyone through.

We have excellent doctors in our community and they should know if you could drive or not by consulting with the person's family.

These tests are run by a private company sanctioned by our provincial government (shame). Age should not be the only factor for losing your license.

So..if you see a wheel scooter coming down the road after the 1st of October with a red flag flying high … get out of my way.
