Drunk driving rules too harsh?

Dear Editor, I find myself reluctantly siding with Premier Redford’s hardliner Prohibition measures needed for our out-of-control provincial DUI problem.

Dear Editor,

I find myself reluctantly siding with Premier Redford’s hardliner Prohibition measures needed for our out-of-control provincial DUI problem. Since the majority offenders just can’t seem to grasp the severity of their actions until someone’s loved one is killed, then these Draconian measures must be installed. However, why set up a double standard, where the rich and powerful get a cake walk and the poor hardworking middle class must tout the rule. Increasing the punishment for the offence committed hits to the bone of the problem and includes all classes of offenders. Since provincially installed law does not possess the authority to override or trump federal law, an overlapping grey area arises where any lawyer worth his salt could punch holes into.

So, those that can afford eminent barristers to champion their causes behind closed doors receive negotiated punishment, while the hardworking mediocre receive the full weight of the courts; in a double standard. Since the majority offenders are the rich and powerful who hold themselves above the law, my advice to the middle class is to “not blow and get a good lawyer.”

In the mean time those that must offend, try to think about why the Premier became empowered to install Draconian measures (0.05) in the first place. Most of these repeat offenders will require rehab just to get their blood alcohol down to these levels.
