Enjoy winter

It’s evident that this much snow in Alberta is indeed an oddity. That does not detract from the fact this area has been hard hit by winter over the past two months.

It’s evident that this much snow in Alberta is indeed an oddity.

That does not detract from the fact this area has been hard hit by winter over the past two months. It’s really something to look out your window and see several feet of cold, wet snow lounging about your yard.

For some, it’s a gift. Children are certainly taking full advantage of the onslaught. Who can forget the fun involved with building snowmen or snow forts? It’s inspiring to watch children at play, and it warms the soul to see them laugh in the face of Old Man Winter. All it takes is a nice, hot cup of hot chocolate to make the experience complete once they are done with their winter frolicking.

For others, winter isn’t as much fun. Shovelling, getting stuck in a driveway or parking lot, or just a slip and fall on a slippery sidewalk are all downfalls to snow, but they are going to happen and there are ways to help alleviate the burden of winter.

For example, drive according to weather conditions. If you have to drive somewhere, leave earlier than you intended. That way, you aren’t forced to drive at speeds that might result in you in a ditch, or worse, hitting another car. Obviously, the worst possible outcome is someone being injured or being killed. That’s a bit extreme, granted, but it can and will happen if people don’t learn to take into consideration slippery roads.

Snow tires are an excellent solution. They go a long way in stemming the slip-and-slide experience Barrhead residents experience after a healthy dumping of snow.

Shovelling is, arguably, one of the most tedious and backbreaking winter activities, and it’s one that everyone seems to put off until the last minute. There are ways to prevent back strain, and shovels today are designed to prevent undue stress on our aging muscles. Take your time when shovelling. Enjoy the crisp, cold air. Make it a family event, and have the children lend a hand in clearing the snow. Not only are you spending quality family time, but you’re teaching your children to be independent and to be proactive.

There are many activities that can be enjoyed in the winter. Cross-country skiing is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the scenery at the same time. Avid skier Howard Gelderman is looking to increase the number of people who take up the sport. There are kilometres upon kilometres of trails at Misty Ridge just waiting to be explored by cross-country skiers, experienced and beginner alike.

The snowmobile trails have been open for more than a month, and it’s a past time that has grown by leaps and bounds across the entire country. Again, it’s a great way to get out and enjoy the weather and the scenery. Barrhead has a snowmobile club, and it is responsible for keeping the local trails groomed so that everyone can enjoy winter’s natural beauties.

Yes, there are some negative sides to winter, but there are also many positive aspects, as well. It just takes someone who is willing to get out and explore. From skiing (either downhill or cross-country), to skating to snowmobiling, these all offer family-oriented fun.
