Federal candidates need to make Bill C393 a priority

Dear Editor:

On March 9, 2011, a majority in the House of Commons passed Bill C393 to allow generic drug companies to send affordable medicines to those who need them in developing countries. This bill was killed in the Senate when the election was called.

Canada can play a significant role in turning the tide on HIV/AIDS by enacting new legislation to amend Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime including a one-licence clause. This would save millions of lives at no cost to Canadian taxpayers.

I call upon all candidates to make this a priority in the new Parliament. Children and their brave grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa are dying while waiting for their medicines.
