Despite some cold temperatures, the annual Blue Heron Street Festival was a crowd pleaser.

Hundreds of residents flocked to the event on Main Street in Barrhead. There was literally something for everyone at the event, whether you were young or young at heart. The organizing committee worked hard to bring to the Town some new entertainment for this year’s festival, and it seems the committee members were successful in finding great additions to the event.

The line never dwindled for Dan the Balloon Man, who spent hours crafting animals and other things out of balloons. Children eagerly but patiently waited for their turn to have something made for them, and Dan provided ample entertainment as they waited. The best part of it all was the fact his balloon animals were free of charge. The organizing committee ensured the cost to parents would be as little as possible, which was likely appreciated by the hundreds of moms and dads who ventured to the festival with their children in tow.

Several stiltwalkers were also highlights for the festival. Dressed in colourful costumes, these folk marched up and down the street while towering high above the heads of festivalgoers. They seemed to draw a lot of attention, not to mention looks of wonder and awe.

Those were but two of the many activities in the works on June 4. Pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s games, a firefighter challenge for youth and plenty of eats were also popular among all who attended the festival. The Blue Heron Street Festival committee is trying very hard to revitalize the event, and they are doing a great job. Many people from around Town have committed themselves to ensuring this event will continue for years to come, and they all deserve some recognition for their efforts.

Having an event like the Street Festival gives residents something they can boast about to our neighbouring communities. For small towns like Barrhead, there really is no reason residents shouldn’t take advantage of these events. Even if someone just walks the streets and browses, it’s a great opportunity to get out of the house and mingle. Everyone at this year’s festival seemed to have a great time, especially the children, and who doesn’t like to have fun?

Now that the festival has come and gone, the committee will meet to discuss the positives of the event and to brainstorm ideas to build on next year’s festival. It’s going to be difficult, but Barrhead residents can count on the fact the committee members will strive to make next year’s festival even more entertaining.

A job well done to the Blue Heron Street Festival organizing committee – putting together this event is a big time commitment, and not everyone is willing to give up their personal time to bring to Town this type of entertainment.
