Fire Prevention Week is upon us, and there are a bevy of messages we should all take to heart from organizations across North America.
Albertans are being told to have two ways out in the case of a fire, whether that’s at home or in a workplace.
Meanwhile, America’s National Fire Protection Association is asking people to prevent kitchen fires. That means not using a stove or stovetop when sleepy or after consuming alcohol and never leaving a stove unattended when it’s on. And while we might think of oven mitts as protecting us from burns, it’s important to keep mitts, as well as wooden utensils, tea towels or food packaging, away from hot stovetops.
If you do experience a small grease or oven fire, don’t try to move the affected pot or pan to the sink or spray it with water. Smother small stovetop grease fires with a lid and turn off the element. For oven fires, keep the door closed and turn the heat off. As with all fires, make sure you have a clear way out and others have vacated the premises.
