The return of the annual reading program at Whispering Hills Primary School will be a boon for the young students.
The program helps students in Grades 2 and 3 get up to the proper reading level, which is important as their education progresses.
But learning to read, and cultivating a love of reading, is important for anyone’s life.
Being literate is an absolute must in our increasingly social world. Information is being transmitted at blinding speeds in multiple forms, and not all of them are spoken. Though traditionalists may decry the rise of the Internet and technological items like iPads (given they may siphon popularity away from old standards like newspapers and books), these advances actually make reading even more prevalent and necessary.
How will today’s children and tomorrow’s future leaders be informed on the world around them if they don’t sharpen their reading and comprehension skills?
Beyond staying informed, reading for pleasure, be it with books, magazines, poems, lyrics or any other form of expression, is a habit that will enrich a person’s life and continually challenge their mind and imagination as they grow older.
