Barrhead has done it again.
At first the announcement of the amount seemed surreal. Did the Barrhead Chamber of Commerce Christmas Gala auction really raise over $33,000 for local charities?
Considering last year the event pulled in around $15,000 and the year before that just over $5,000, the final tally came as a shock to the Festival of Trees committee.
But yes, the number rang true. Barrhead’s ability to give to those in need is no secret, but a grand total of $33,315.34 can still make anyone’s jaw drop.
Funds will be going to Barrhead FCSS, Sparrows Hope, Ripple Connection, the Tree of Hope, and towards the new pool.
Even members of the 4-H clubs in the Barrhead district were given a donation for their scholarship fund. And they deserved it, as they spend the evening of the gala bussing tables, taking coats, and assisting with the set up and clean up of the event.
The people of Barrhead once again deserve a pat on the back for their generosity.
With a pattern that only seems to be on the uprise, who knows what next year’s auction will hold. The 2014 gala, which is booked for Nov. 29, is off to a good start with three trees donated to the auction already.
So congratulations to the Barrhead Chamber of Commerce, particularly the Festival of Trees committee. Members worked so hard to put this event on and make it what it was: a success.
It’s events like this that make not just people small towns, but in any community, proud to be where they are.
