Everyone knows of the infamous Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck arguing over whether or not it is duck or rabbit season. Well this spring the province of Alberta will be on Bugs’ side of things.
They may not be ducks, but they are becoming their own pesky problem, and in order to solve it, Environment Canada is welcoming and encouraging hunters to fire away.
The snow goose is a bird that is mostly white, except for a few feathers on its tail end, and with over one million in population, it is no wonder they are becoming a bit of a problem.
With an ever growing population, these migrating birds are destroying their own habitat by doing what geese do, grazing and grubbing in the frail Artic tundra. The geese are not only damaging the soil salinity but are also removing vegetation from the area. According to Environment Canada, suitable nesting grounds are limited, and could even take decades to recover from the damages.
Details on the licensing are still being ironed out, but hunters are welcome to up to 50 birds a day.
The season starts in March and runs through until June and will mark the first spring hunt in Alberta. The birds migrate through Alberta during this time, and have begun to extend their stay thanks to the food availability.
So why not make like Elmer Fudd and join Environment Canada in controlling the population of the snow goose this spring season, after all it is “duck” season.
