Inconveniences of 49 Street

The work does continue in earnest along 49th street. As necessary as it is, it is still quite inconvenient for the businesses who operate, including the Advocate.

As Nikiforuk continues to dig holes right out our window, some of our customers have to use the back alley to get into our building so they can conduct business. Even some of our neighbours have taken a hit too.

Walk-in business continues to suffer for Buttons-Up and Electrik City. But, as theowner of Button-Up said, it is what it is. And both would seem to understand that this work, while challenging, is very much needed when you try and see the big picture.

But other business have really lucked out. Especially those who have back parking lots for customers to use. As well, one business said they do not usually see much business in the summer time anyways, so for them, it's just business as usual.

By the way, kudos to Northern Lakes College and other businesses for offering up their parking areas for customers to use while construction continues. That is very much appreciated.

But on to the construction, as our esteemed mayor said, this is a once-in-a-generation upgrade. It needs to be done, but does it leave it any less convenient for the businesses along that street? No, it does not.

But the workers do try to make it as accessible as possible while they dig up the roads, put in new pipes, and keep everything running smoothly. So in the end, it will all be worth it. Let's hope, anyway.
