It's coming soon

True, spring will drop in on this part of the country shortly, but what’s ahead for Albertans is another provincial election.

True, spring will drop in on this part of the country shortly, but what’s ahead for Albertans is another provincial election.

Premier Jim Prentice revealed last week that not long after the budget is tabled later this month, he will ask for an election and run on the basis of what is in that budget.

It was abundantly clear when Prentice was running for the leadership that he would want to achieve a new mandate soon after winning the job. A few floor-crossers, a decimated opposition, falling oil prices and the economy heading south faster than snowbirds to Arizona gave him more reason to ask Albertans for an early vote so he can launch his overhaul plan for his government.

Call it being opportunistic or something else if you wish, but Prentice has shown just what his colours are right from his first step into provincial politics.

Whether that will translate into another landslide PC victory remains to be seen, but it will be seen very soon.
