Town of Barrhead Council recently chose to postpone their ultimatum regarding the aquatic centre situation.
Town Council did not follow through with their own ultimatum to halt any further discussions with the County as of August 8. The fact that the Town did not follow through could be very disturbing to some residents and it should be.
It was pointed out to the Leader that based on a recent survey in the newspaper, nearly 90 per cent of people polled agreed with the Town giving the County an ultimatum. If we use that logic, isn’t it safe to think that those same people would have liked to see the Town stick to their guns and actually kill the pool at their August 12 Council meeting.
Town of Barrhead Mayor Gerry St. Pierre addressed the fact that the lack of a decision may make the Council look weak, however he doesn’t think that will be the case.
“Not really. We didn’t bluff but after 40 minutes it was obvious that we weren’t going to reach a consensus. With an issue like this, we almost have to be united in whatever decision we make. Our decision has to be unanimous and we weren’t going to achieve that last night,” St. Pierre said. “As I said earlier, what is another three weeks after fighting and working on this for four years but we are still serious about our ultimatum. We are not saying we won’t follow through with our ultimatum. We are just saying we want to think about it for a few more weeks.”
Town Council didn’t stick to their guns and decided to extend a deadline to the County in hopes of achieving an amicable result. But, realistically, if the two municipalities couldn’t reach an agreement after four years, will an extra three weeks really matter?
