Dear Editor,
Although Pro-lifers are disappointed that Motion 312 was defeated, as it would have placed some long overdue restrictions on abortion in this country, there are still plenty of reasons to be thankful. A vital conversation has been opened up again, and 91 of our MPs voted positively. Three cheers for our local MPs: Storseth and Merrifield. Thanks for standing up for our most vulnerable fellow humans! We’re proud of you!
It’s quite evident though; that the real question isn’t the one we just debated: When does life begin? After all, we are living in the 21st century of Science, Genetic Code, and Ultra Sound. If we’re honest we all know that babies are babies. Maybe we could continue this debate by wrestling with some deeper foundational questions. Instead of expecting politicians to answer them for us, let’s seriously think about them in our discussions and start a grass roots movement. For starters, think about answering these basic questions:
#1: Where did we come from? Do we really think we are products of chance? Did we evolve slowly, or through a big bang? For me, it’s so much more reasonable to just believe the Bible’s story which tells me that a personal, infinite God created the universe, and on the sixth day he created man.
#2: Who are we? If you look into some fellow human’s eyes, what do you see? Is it some chance combination of cells, or a higher order monkey? I’m so much more inspired to see the greatest miracle that God ever made. When I look into someone’s eyes I’m looking into a window, to see the soul of a human being. The Bible says we were made from the dust, just like the animals. But there is a difference. God himself breathed his personality into us. Next time you look at a person, stand in awe! He or she represents God on earth, as his image bearer. If you think of who God is, don’t you think that is just too incredible?
#3: What are we here for? Cultures which cannot answer the above questions have always tried to create man in the image of man, ending up in totalitarian regimes. Instead of working in hope and solving problems, such societies only see the ultimate solution: turn people into slaves, or kill them. God created us to be free, to reflect his image, and to be busy with his work. Our assignment is to recreate the Garden of Eden where ever we live. The tools he gives us are simple: Accept salvation offered through Jesus Christ; Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.
#4: What’s going to happen to us? God’s kingdom is going to come, on earth as it is in heaven. That’s a sure promise. God never lies. If you don’t believe me, go through the Bible, and check on the hundreds of prophesies throughout the Old Testament, and prove which one was not fulfilled. Jesus Christ won the battle, and his kingdom is going to spread over all the earth, until every knee bows before him. (Rom. 14:11)
So, even if our Prime Minister is a bit confused, it doesn’t mean we have to be. Our Creator made human beings a little less than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. (Ps. 8) God can use ordinary people like you and me to carry on his conversations, and advance his kingdom. Please keep asking the important questions, discuss them with your kids, coworkers, friends, and churches, and please pray that God would heal our land. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, take a stand for truth and freedom.
Respectfully submitted,
Yvonne Harink
