To the Editor,
As a member of this county, I’m writing because I stand with those who have voted to keep our sidewalks neutral, but I fully sympathize with those who argue against neutrality in the moral realm; because we are all aware it’s not a thing.
I am making this argument against moral neutrality because both sides speak of there being a right and wrong. The difficulty for all involved comes down to what standard we are appealing to when we suggest there is a right and a wrong. As Christians we believe and appeal to the moral law as found in the 10 commandments as the standard to live by as given to us by the God of the Bible. The “Thou shalt not” does in no way suggest there is neutrality.
Historically Christians would invite you into their homes, preach from their pulpits and stand on street corners to tell you this world belongs to God and so does the body you spend your life in. He created it for a purpose and His law has a seventh commandment which deals with what we may do with our body and it’s sexual organs.
Everything about our lives and sexuality belongs to Him and He wants us to cultivate a committed loving sexual relationship with one person so that we build a home into which we bring children into this world who we hope will grow up healthy and happy to continue this pattern, this is how it has been as far as recorded history extends. Something called “sin” (breaking the law) has wreaked havoc on this picture, and has brought damage to relationships in many varied ways; even and as well as in the lives of those who call themselves Christian. Jesus said it all begins in our thought life. When we entertain wrong thoughts they can became words shared to others and then damaging, scaring actions can follow which are not only against God’s law, but are sometimes even crimes against the law of the land.
It’s also important to be reminded that there will be “a Day of Reckoning”, We all know consciously or subconsciously this is the case - it’s often why we are so heatedly invested in these discussions; the conflict shows there is more at stake than simply the issue. That day the moral books will be opened and The One Who created this body will ask what we have done with it.
The God of the Bible tells us that in love He sent His Son to this world as a baby, to grow up among us in a family; to suffer and die for us so that when we find ourselves feeling hopelessly guilty - like we have a great debt to pay with no way to pay it, He has extended His love by allowing the very blood of His Son to be poured out to pay this debt for you. This Blood is the only currency through which you may transact with Him and He will pay your debt exclusively by you having faith and believing He paid it on the cross two thousand years ago. It’s a free gift for the asking with all the cost being on Him. Thankfully there’s nothing neutral about it!
