Local management means listening to locals

Aspen View is on the cusp of gaining greater control of the new school project. Kudos to the division for wanting local minds to be at the fore of this development, not distant, bogged-down provincial staff.

But with greater local control comes greater local responsibility. The time for the division to hold its long-awaited public forums on the new school is now. Some would say it’s long overdue. Residents can no longer be told that the ball is in the province’s court, or that we’re waiting on this or that to be handed down from on high.

Athabasca County is learning that it is not enough to approve developments (in this case, temporary RV parks) and then wait for someone to appeal them. Aspen View would do well to learn from this and see that the sooner any public body brings public discourse into the picture, the better.
