Making Canada a safer place
I found the Hon. David Yurdiga’s letter in the Feb 17th Advocate interesting.
Given that we know that there is a forthcoming federal election, it is interesting to see what will be the focus of the campaign.
Evidently, the fabrication and the installation of the Canada Action Plan signs solved both the economic and the employment problems and now national security will be the theme of the next election.
Prior to reading Mr. Yurdiga’s letter, I thought that Canada was a rather peaceful and, if anything, somewhat irrelevant country.
It is of concern that our politicians seem to cause some stress by blindly and unequivocally supporting some governments and insulting, placing sanctions against and ignoring the legitimacy of others.
It is also a bit troublesome that we are involved in military action that is neither supported by the UN nor NATO and that we are selling weapons to governments which have a rather troubling track record.
However, I naively thought that Canada was too small of a concern to really attract much attention. I guess I was mistaken.
However, the larger question is how successful might the Conservative Party be in engendering fear of terrorism to ensure them of yet another term in government?
If we were to poll the pundits at the local coffee shop, probably the consensus would be that, like it or not, the Conservative Party is the only option.
Surely, it would be argued, that we wouldn’t want a Liberal government.
After all, they left a budget surplus that caused all sorts of problems for the Conservatives to spend so that they could win elections on the basis of eradicating the debt.
And everyone knows that we would never tolerate an NDP government because they are social democrats.
That might see Canada becoming like the Scandinavian countries.
The only other option would be the Green Party.
Wow! We certainly wouldn’t want that.
Canada is simply not ready for a government that believes in being conservative.
The Green Party would distract us from our concerns over terrorists and direct us toward action on climate change.
Everyone knows that climate change is simply a hoax perpetuated by a few thousand people like Schindler, Suzuki and Hansen.
Nope, we sheep had better follow Mr. Yurdiga’s advice and make sure that the streets of Colinton, Grassland and Perryvale are safe from terrorists and let those guys digging out in the Maritimes worry about climate change.
