Re: Canada Senior Games held in Strathcona County. Dear Editor, I would like to respond to an article in the Sept. 16 Barrhead Leader, page 8A. It was not just the 55+ Summer Games – it was Canada 55+ Senior Summer Games. As I, Bessie Stevens, are a director for Area 6 and we are in Zone 5, I felt it is my place to speak on behalf of everyone that went to the games from this area.
Re: Canada Senior Games held in Strathcona County
Dear Editor,
I would like to respond to an article in the Sept.
We had 27 people taking part and the sports they participated in were: golfing, curling, bowling and swimming.
Other people that brought back medals were:
• Norman Miller, George Visser brought home Silver in Golf in their age group
• Gail Hrycak, Bronze in Golf
• Judy Ulrich, Silver in Golf
• Kate Patrick placed 6th in her division in Golf
• Richard Jacobs, Robert Lee, Rita McCaw, brought home four Gold medals each in swimming
• Bowler, Don Jennings, Bronze in the scratch section
Our curling team didn't place but enjoyed the experience. Some of our golfers didn't get in the medal rounds but enjoyed their time spent at the games.
This was a wonderful experience for all who attended as not everyone gets a chance to take part in games at these level. We competed against others from across Canada and the Yukon with close to 2,300 people overall and 700 from Alberta.
The next Canada Games are in Ontario in 2016.
Closer to home the Alberta 55+ Winter Games will be held in Lethbridge near the end of February. Zone play offs for these Games start in mid-October and run until mid-December. For details call the Barrhead Senior Centre, Blue Heron Bowling Alley or call Bessie 780-584-2536.
