With the Oilers on a losing streak that seemed impenetrable, one more loss and he was sure to go.

After 113 games with the team, Dallas Eakins has been sent packing.

Of course the team did win one game 2-1 against San Jose on Dec. 7, but that was after a 11 game losing streak, which continued shortly after their much-needed win.

So it is no wonder that after much deliberation, Eakins has been asked to step off the bench, so General Manager Craig MacTavish can step up.

So far this season the Oilers have won one out of the 19 games they have played so far in the Western Conference.

With the Oilers close enough for all to enjoy, it is no wonder so many Albertans have become diehard fans over the past few years.

I have watched the team play multiple games since moving to the area, and cheered on the Oilers as they played my beloved Blackhawks in a game that even made me cringe.

I feel bad for more than just the fans when a team seems to be doing so poorly during the season. The players also deserve some sympathy, as they clamber to the change room after every game, listening to the sounds of the fans they disappointed.

We all hate hearing how we are disappointing someone; imagine it coming from not only hundreds, but thousands of people every time you step on, or off the ice.

Maybe this Christmas we should give the Oilers a gift, an overwhelming feeling of pride, because whether or not they win or lose, they are still the team that plays right here.

Go Oilers!
