Dear Editor,
I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Bert Proft upon hearing the news of his passing away on May 20, 2013.
Bert was a long-time friend and former colleague who not only influenced myself, but many of the residents of Barrhead, the town he called home and served for many years.
As a Town of Barrhead Councillor for an impressive 22 years and community advocate, Bert was a good man and believed in Barrhead. He will be remembered for his passion and time spent standing up for the community and those most vulnerable. In particular, Bert made significant contributions as the Social Housing Chair and was known for his support for the Hillcrest Home Society. Bert was also an avid Legion member and generously dedicated much time towards the Historical Society and Volunteer Appreciation events.
Most of my memories come from when I had the opportunity to serve with Bert on Town Council. As my first public role, I appreciated his encouragement, support and practical advice. Bert always had the best interest of our community at heart, and a unique ability to act as a passionate voice of the community.
Bert helped build a stronger, better community in Barrhead. He was a friend and our community will truly miss him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time, particularly his wife Edie.
