The countdown is on and we’re now less than two weeks away from the Town of Westlock’s Oct. 5 municipal byelection.

Candidates Murtaza Jamaly, Pierre Ouimet, and Benita Pedersen are well along their respective campaign trails. They’ve advertised, met with residents, and knocked on doors all in hopes of convincing voters they’re the right person for the job.

We’re sure that some voters already know which box they’re going to check off on their ballot on Election Day, but if you’re still undecided, or would like to validate your decision, you’re in luck. The Westlock News is partnering with the Westlock Municipal Library to bring you an all-candidates debate.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, all three candidates will gather at the library from 3-4 p.m. to tell you why they should be elected. This is your opportunity to come out and hear first-hand the priorities and expertise of these candidates so that you can step into the ballot box and make an informed decision to determine who will sit on council for the next two years.

It’s also a chance to meet the candidates, if you can’t already, and have them answer the questions that are relevant and most important to you.

Some might be asking: What’s the point? It’s a by-election for one council position and it doesn’t mean anything.

That’s not true. While it is one position, it’s one more voice from a different perspective that can bring your issues to the forefront when establishing policy, deliberating the budget, and setting tax rates. If none of that inspires you the cost of the election is $8,000 and you’re paying for it, so you might as well have a say.

As we’ve already said during this campaign, municipal politics are important and council takes care of the most relevant issues that you face on a day-to-day basis. From road pavement to garbage collection to economic development to the rate of taxes you pay on your property — it all falls under the responsibility of municipal government.

So come on out to the library on Saturday and be a part of democracy. Find out which candidate suits your interests best and who should represent you at the council table.
