Dear Editor,
After attending the amalgamation meeting on Tuesday, June 16, I found myself very disappointed with the apathy of people. Around 50 people attended and about one half of those people where staff and councillors. I encourage all county residents to attend the next meeting on June 24, 7:00 p.m. at the Summerdale hall. If you think amalgamation is ok and don’t mind someone else making all the decisions, then don’t worry about the meeting.
However, if you think that the town of Barrhead council just wants to amalgamate with the county because the town wants the county’s money, then you’re thinking like me.
I sincerely hope the meeting at Summerdale Hall overflows with people attending to challenge the town of Barrhead’s decision to build a $13 to $15 million aquatic centre, a centre we cannot afford.
If you want your taxes to go up substantially, don’t attend and let the pool happen the way the town of Barrhead is proposing. If not, quit being apathetic!
The town and county of Barrhead were a model on how well two neighbouring municipalities can work together. But that was in the past. I see a lot of animosity now. Wonder why? In my opinion it is because the town has forced the county into amalgamation talks. Would this have happened if there wasn’t an Aquatic centre issue? I doubt it, but if you think differently, please enlighten me.
I don’t think the town of Barrhead council really know what all is involved when it comes to amalgamation. I do know they’re spending thousands of dollars just for the study alone including grant money and who knows what the cost for the extra time spent by town and county staff.
