Dear Editor,
I received a phone call on April 3, on my caller I.D. it showed WOODLD CNTY 780-584-3728. Initially I presumed it was a call from my local county office.
When I answered, he said they were calling with a special promotion on behalf of West Jet Airlines. I asked him how they had my number and why were they offering me this special promotion, he proceeded to explain that if I shopped at West Edmonton Mall, or had an air miles card that my name had been entered by a business sponsoring this special deal.
He wanted to know if I was over 30 and did I own a credit card. After I answered both of those questions he transferred me to another person.
She explained that West Jet Airlines was doing a promotion, a one week trip to the Mexican Riviera, staying in a 5 star resort. But I had to decide immediately to qualify, I explained to her that I am not a compulsive buyer and would need time to think about it, she then hung up on me.
I then contacted West Jet Airlines, they never do any promotions over the phone.
I also contacted the local RCMP, they put me in touch with the Canadian Anti Fraud Center. I reported this travel scam to the Canadian Anti Fraud Center and they took the information and informed me that they have had other calls regarding this. If you have received one of these phone calls please call their toll free number is 1-888-495-8501.
