Pink is a common colour in February, though it isn’t always in honour of Valentine’s Day.
With the annual Hair Massacure in Edmonton event swiftly approaching, the amount of pink-haired people popping up in Barrhead is growing.
Tabatha Sheehan and Joscelyn Liske, two Grade 5 students at Barrhead Elementary School, have just taken the plunge into the world of bright pink hair.
The two girls may only be in elementary school, but they have a strong grasp on what they’re doing and, more importantly, why they’re doing it.
This will be Joscelyn’s second time participating in the event, the shortness of her hair being the only evidence of her shaved head last year.
Tabatha however is a first timer.
Their hair will be gone after this Friday, but the thought of contributing to a good cause outweighs the fear of a bald head.
At an age where teasing from peers at the smallest of differences is not unheard of, this is grand gesture from these Barrhead youngsters.
Yet, the girls are heading forward with a smile. They have vowed to support one another and have nothing but exciting comments about the experience.
Even Tabatha’s mother Tara, hair stylist at A Kut Above who helped dye the girls’ hair, donned fashionable pink tips atop her own head.
These two girls haven’t been the only ones to sign up for Hair Massacure.
Last month young Keana Bauer stepped forward, her brown locks flowing long past her shoulders. Her hair isn’t pink, but the Grade 5 student still has big plans when it comes to the Edmonton event.
Bauer decided she wanted to donate her hair two years ago, and has been growing it for the cause ever since.
Because of Bauer’s determination and dedication to her goal, her mother Colleen decided to join her daughter. She had her hair dyed pink, and is prepared to sport a bald head after this Friday too.
Women generally are quite attached to the hair on their head, but these young girls are looking at the big picture. They are set on helping any way they can, and if that means braving a bald head during an Alberta winter, shave away.
