Last Friday, Barrhead shone a light on the trades and the students considering that career path.
The day began with a Career Tailgate Party with beef on a bun, the booth manned by young cooks and chefs.
Among the students and community members were two representatives of the Government of Alberta’s Learning Clicks program. The young women, who had just recently emerged from high school themselves, were making the rounds to youth and inquiring as to whether the secondary students had considered their post secondary options.
The ladies had brochures available that listed every available trade in Alberta, as well as information on the Registered Apprentice Program (RAP). Careers: the next Generation field director Lorraine Jackson also made an appearance at the event, seeking out others who wanted to help pave the road to a bright future for Barrhead youth.
A highlight of the afternoon event was the tour of the high school’s trade wing that gave members of the public an opportunity to see just what students were working on. Community members witnessed, first hand, the work of welding, wood construction, automotive, and home economic students. They could ask questions and see current projects, including several items that would soon be up for auction at the Chamber of Commerce Gala later that evening.
The best part? Money from the Tailgate Party, as well student’s items auction items, went towards a fund to help youth pursue the trades.
