Proven leadership

Dear Editor, Governing a country has never been easy, especially when people look to government as the solver of all problems, the hander out of goodies, and the Santa Claus, who should meet all our needs.

Dear Editor,

Governing a country has never been easy, especially when people look to government as the solver of all problems, the hander out of goodies, and the Santa Claus, who should meet all our needs. Living in a democracy, voting gives us an opportunity to send a representative to parliament. Yes, the Conservative Government has made mistakes. We the people have to keep up our voice and share our concerns. We’ve got to keep praying for courage for our leaders to tackle the issues that really build a civilization, including moral issues like abortion and euthanasia. Having said that, let’s look at the facts. The Harper Government has done some things well. Despite the fact that Harper’s not bowing down to the media’s agenda, a thinking person should acknowledge he deserves some praise.

There is a reason Canada has been declared the best country in the world in which to live. In all fairness, Harper’s government:

- got us through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

- reduced the GST by two percentage points, a 30% reduction on a tax that we pay on everything.

- introduced pension splitting - which will save money for retired folks.

- introduced programs and tax benefits that help me as a mom stay at home rather than send my child to paid daycare.

- instituted tax free savings accounts, which benefit anyone willing to save.

- negotiated a number of international trade deals which will stand us in good stead in years to come.

- is pledged to protect Israel, a country threatened from all sides in the Middle East.

- is showing courage in standing up to terrorism

- is using caution and common sense in the present refugee crisis

There is a reason the Conservative’s slogan is: PROVEN LEADERSHIP. Promises are easy to make, but Harper has a proven track record.

Respectfully submitted,

Yvonne Harink
