Rain or Shine

There are some days I really wish good old Mother Nature will just make up her mind. I mean, does she want the sun to come out, or would she prefer a more wetter environment? I have to ask, especially after all that rain we got last week.

There are some days I really wish good old Mother Nature will just make up her mind. I mean, does she want the sun to come out, or would she prefer a more wetter environment?

I have to ask, especially after all that rain we got last week. While it did stop for much of June 12-14, during the afternoon of the 15th, it was back with a vengeance. And I found this to be worse than the previous weekend.

When i was in court June 11 covering the proceedings, it was raining that day too. But unlike the rain I would encounter on June 15, I did not see my jacket completely drenched within three minutes of being out there. That was some hard rain on the 15th. I even had to hang my jacket up to let it dry. That did not happen during the rainy weather on the weekend.

As much as I would like to complain about Mother Nature's insanity, in some ways, the rain is good for the farmers. One of the obvious reasons is it helps their crops grow, and they need those to help sustain themselves. For crop growers, no rain means no crops, and no profits.

But, as some of this week's articles suggest, you sometimes have to look at the other side of the coin. It also leaves some country roads muddy too, and in some cases, unusable. In my opinion, something needs to be done about those back country roads, as some have not been upgraded or repaired in about the time I've been alive. (I'm 34, by the way.)

Now I realize that this is not just happening in Athabasca County, but something needs to be done. The county's public works committee is holding a meeting on June 19. I pray to god that councillors come up with some solutions to help take care of this issue. It obviously will not happen overnight, but hopefully a plan gets in place.

Moving on, let's talk sports for a second. Soccer seems to be on the minds of many people around the world, especially with the World Cup of Soccer going on in Russia. It would be nice to see England win for a change. They have only ever gotten it once, back in 1966. That's a long time to wait, so hopefully, they can pull it off.

But closer to home, Alberta's Tier IV soccer provincials is going to happen July 6-8 down in Carstairs, and Athabasca FC's U15 squad has a good shot of winning gold this year. I mean, they already took top spot at the Sherwood Park District tournament last month, and then, earlier this month, they got gold again, this time at the Camrose Night Classic. So who knows, this could be their year.

Well, I'm out. Will be back soon with more Bites from BET. See ya!!
