Dear Editor, The past week has been a challenging one for the members of the RCMP as a whole and for local members at the Barrhead Detachment. The funeral for Constable David Wynn in St. Albert was attended by five members from Barrhead and was an emotional but uplifting experience. The support shown by members of the extended policing community and by the public was overwhelming.
Dear Editor,
The past week has been a challenging one for the members of the RCMP as a whole and for local members at the Barrhead Detachment. The funeral for Constable David Wynn in St. Albert was attended by five members from Barrhead and was an emotional but uplifting experience. The support shown by members of the extended policing community and by the public was overwhelming.
Locally, police dealt with a potentially deadly situation on January 28. This incident prompted us to request that the schools in town be locked down to prevent students from leaving the schools and entering the area where we were searching for a male who we believed to be armed and dangerous Thankfully the situation was resolved with the arrest of the suspect while nobody, including the suspect, was injured. Staff at Barrhead Elementary and Barrhead Composite Schools acted promptly and professionally and are to be commended.
I recognize the emotions that locking down the school can bring out in people. The decision wasn't taken lightly but it was made in good faith that it was necessary to protect our children. Once the decision was made I braced for the possibility of a negative backlash but the opposite has been true. We have received an outpouring of support that has been absolutely humbling.
On behalf of the members and staff at Barrhead Detachment I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support we receive on a constant basis and especially this past week. It is a privilege to serve the people of Barrhead and area.
R.W. Dodds, Sgt.
