My name is Terry Colborne and I founded Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS) in the fall of 2009. I am writing in response to rumours that may be floating around the Barrhead community that my wife and I moved away from the Barrhead area and therefore, BARS is no longer operating. I would like to clear the air and confirm that while it is true that my wife and I have moved from the area due to personal reasons, Barrhead Animal Rescue Society is not closing it's doors. In fact, we just recently celebrated our 1000th animal adoption in September of this year.
BARS has become a significant contributor to animal welfare in the central Alberta area over the past several years. I can assure you that this achievement was not the result of one person's effort, but the result of the commitment of several dedicated volunteers over the period of time that we have been in existence. It is no secret that while we do have some longer term volunteers within the Barrhead community, a vast majority of our dedicated volunteers do reside outside of the community.
So, while BARS is still very much alive and operating, my move from the Barrhead area does mean that now more than ever, BARS is in need of local, dedicated individuals to step forward as volunteers in order to remain effective within the community. A prime example of this is that my move from the Barrhead area means that we no longer have a dedicated individual to respond to local calls regarding animals in need. Prior to my departure from the area, I was solely responsible for attending to calls of help within our community. We are in need of local volunteers to fill this void.
If we are not able to develop a committed group of Barrhead area volunteers, I am afraid that our efforts to focus on the needs of our local Barrhead area may not be able to be sustained. There is unfortunately a great need for our society within the community and so I call upon community members to step forward in ensuring that their animal rescue society continues to meet this need within the community.
