Road rules matter

It’s big, it’s red, it has eight sides. Sound familiar? We learned about them from our parents, and when we recited songs and poems about road safety in elementary school.

It’s big, it’s red, it has eight sides. Sound familiar?

We learned about them from our parents, and when we recited songs and poems about road safety in elementary school.

But, despite a stop sign being easily recognizable, there are still some who manage to blatantly ignore it.

Now that the roads are free and clear of snow and ice, clean and appealing in the cycling world, bikes are frequenting the Barrhead area.

After a long winter, it seems some riders may be in need of a quick reminder when it comes to the rules of the road.

Bicycles always need to stop for stop signs and red lights, no exceptions.

If a cyclist is whizzing down the road and blows through a stop sign smack into an oncoming car, there’s no question who’s going to win that battle.

And those pedestrians walking about? Yes, you are required to yield to them.

As for helmets, they aren’t required by law unless you’re under 18. However if you find yourself taking a tumble, why not have something hard between your head and the pavement?

Attire may not seem important when it comes to a ride through town or the countryside, but it could be the difference between a car safely passing by and a deadly collision.

Enjoy the beautiful weather, but stay safe!
