School plans

The 2012-13 school year may be winding down, but matters of education are still top of mind for many local policy makers and residents.

The 2012-13 school year may be winding down, but matters of education are still top of mind for many local policy makers and residents.

In the recent months and weeks, reports of the likelihood of a new school in the town of Athabasca have created a buzz. Though there is no guarantee the new educational facility will come to fruition, that hasn’t quelled speculation as to what it might look like (and where it might be) if it does.

An article in this week’s issue of the Advocate endeavours to answer as much of the questions as is currently possible.

We are still a long way from seeing a shovel go into the ground, if one ever does. Credit is due to Aspen View for approaching this opportunity with such vigor that it’s hard to imagine it not coming to be; that possibility does exist, however, and will until the financing (the bulk of which will likely come from the Alberta taxpayer) materializes.

Location wise, it’s clear the Athabasca Regional Multiplex and its adjoining land is the only choice Aspen View is entertaining.

Though plans can change, it seems that Landing Trail Intermediate School is safe, and would simply lose the Grade 7 students (and gain the division office) if the new school becomes a reality. Aspen View is reluctant to close the school given its good condition and prime real estate.

The new school would combine Grades 7 to 12, with Edwin Parr Composite being shuttered.

If your kids are just now entering high school, don’t expect to see them transfer to the new school. Superintendent Brian LeMessurier sees the new school as being at least four years away.

As the project inches forward, more questions will undoubtedly arise.
