Seeing bright days ahead

Dear Editor,

Re: A response to “I think our future is doomed.”

It was interesting for me to read the article – I think our future is doomed. I sat and pondered for a while and thought I must write my view. Although I only attended the School Expo for approximately one hour, I did see happy kids, both boys and girls. There were young adults commenting on the vast choices in careers, and that some just were not sure what they wanted or would do. The Expo brought in schools from different communities and our students from BCHS grades 9-12. During my short stay, I did not personally see any behavior that is outside the norm of suitable teen behavior.

When I arrived at the school on Expo day, I had the door opened for me with a warm hello from a grade 10 boy. Several young men and women talked to me and were very polite and appropriate. I saw a few youth with mini-footballs tossing them around, some laughter and fun, but again nothing inappropriate and I was only there an hour. I guess I am also am biased; I get to be involved with these youth on several occasions thoughout the year, from sporting events, community activities to award ceremonies. I see the majority of youth from Barrhead Composite High respectful, helpful and polite.

During the many years my husband has coached several of the school teams not once has he had a problem. In fact quite often are compliments from other teams and referees on how they great they behave and play with such sportsmanship. I also saw these young people gather around each other and families during the tragedies of last year with maturity beyond their years. How they are supporting their school mate that is fighting cancer this year. I have to say that I am very comfortable turning our future over to these youth, and while a few may deserve a slap on the side of the head, it is more often that I think is deserving of some adults of the community.

I guess I get to spend a lot of time with the youth of the community and with that I am comfortable to say I think we have a bright and shining future in the years to come.
