Given the recent comments from two high-ranking area RCMP officers on speeding motorists in articles that have appeared in the Advocate for two straight weeks, all drivers should take notice of how fast they are travelling on area highways from now on.

Collisions and fatalities may be down this year, but the fact that in less than 10 months, the RCMP in the region has dished out close to 2,500 speeding tickets – some for more than 70 kilometres over the posted limit – should point out there is still a serious problem with excess speed on our roads.

Speed does kill.

The statistics from police, government and driver safety advocates point that out time after time. Yet, somehow, a portion of the driving population haven’t caught on or refuse to.

What is it going to take? The speeding driver killing someone or themselves in a collision or learning that a relative has been injured or killed because of a speeding related crash.

One can only hope that isn’t the case, because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely.

Now, be safe out there.
