So what now?

Seen for so long as the stragglers on the path to a new aquatic centre, Barrhead County Council made some movement last week. However, it is unlikely the municipality impressed many pro-pool frontrunners.

Seen for so long as the stragglers on the path to a new aquatic centre, Barrhead County Council made some movement last week. However, it is unlikely the municipality impressed many pro-pool frontrunners.

At their meeting last Tuesday, County councillors agreed on the wording for a New Year plebiscite and, in doing so, made clear they only intend contributing a maximum of $5 million towards the project. Unless plans for a $10 million pool, presumably without any fancy add-ons, can be put on the table, the County cannot now be a 50/50 partner with the Town in the project.

There are also questions now about the value of the pro-pool vote in the Oct. 21 Town plebiscite, which asked residents whether they supported the Town borrowing $7m on the understanding the County will make an equal contribution.

So where do we go from here?
