Spectacular fireworks

What a cracking way to herald 2013! Anyone who saw the New Year’s Eve fireworks display enjoyed a spectacular treat that lived up to – no, exceeded – expectations. As is perhaps becoming a tradition, the night skies were lit up in more than one area.

What a cracking way to herald 2013!

Anyone who saw the New Year’s Eve fireworks display enjoyed a spectacular treat that lived up to – no, exceeded – expectations.

As is perhaps becoming a tradition, the night skies were lit up in more than one area.

We’ve heard that Fire Chief John Whittaker ran the show from the Agrena, while Gary Hove took up position in the school grounds. What took place were two displays in counterpoint which made for a memorable experience. Tremendous kudos to these two gentlemen, to the whole Fire Department and Recreation Department for doing Barrhead proud and showing our visitors that even a small community can provide great entertainment.

There have been many positive comments from out-of-towners about what they witnessed.

All of this bodes well as Barrhead prepares for a stellar summer featuring the Alberta 55-plus senior games. Perhaps fireworks displays could illuminate the opening and closing ceremonies.

And now more good news.

A random Leader survey shows that Main Street stores enjoyed a prosperous Christmas, thanks to local shoppers. Why did shoppers spend here?

It may have been the bone-chilling cold, the wide range of products, the friendly atmosphere, the “shop local” campaign or the uniqueness that turns Main Street into Quality Street. Of course, it may have been all these things complementing each other like ingredients of a Christmas dinner.

Whatever the explanation, it augurs well for Barr-head’s business community, as does the response to the “shop local” campaign.

The campaign attracted an impressive response from the public. We congratulate Isaac Friesen, who won the $2,000 grand draw prize.
