Politicans are accused, most of the time, of not getting things done right the first time. However, when it comes to town council not sitting on a rather small $96,000 surplus and going whole hog with its reserves to improve local infrastructure, to quote a famous Canadian – ‘They made it right.’
And they also will make taxpayers happy, at least this year, because they were able to do all these projects without hiking taxes.
The other positive to come out of this decision is that, with the slight economic downturn in Alberta, the prices to get the work completed are lower than they have been for a while as companies are hungry for jobs and will put up competitive bids.
That means saving money by tendering now, even if the work doesn’t begin until next year.
Unfortunately, there is one big project that is due to break ground within the next 12 months, along with a couple of others, that will ensure taxes will rise in the years to come.
So, take solace in the fact the town will save some cash now, before dipping into the taxpayer well next year.
