It was a cold autumn day last Friday when the ceremonial shovels plunged into the ground to signify the beginning of development of the new sports park at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.
But those who had gathered for the event weren’t about to let a little cold weather keep them from enjoying a moment that had long been dreamed of, and which has now been realized only thanks to the efforts of a lot of dedicated people.
Dignitaries like Athabasca mayor Roger Morrill, Athabasca-Redwater MLA and minister of infrastructure Jeff Johnson and Athabasca County reeve David Yurdiga were on hand for the event, and all three spoke of how great a place the new sports park will be for the community and the surrounding area.
Certainly, the contribution of local councils and politicians cannot be understated.
And the new addition would certainly not be happening if not for the provincial government’s grant of $600,000. Whether you consider it a birthday present in recognition of Athabasca’s centennial or a thank you for everything the community did in support of Slave Lake, it got the project over the hump.
Then there are the local sports organizations, like the Athabasca Soccer Association which raised $250,000, and Athabasca Minor Ball which chipped in $100,000. That local, volunteer-run organizations were able to raise so much money is amazing and worthy of great recognition.
Athabasca University provided the land for the sports park, which will go even further towards making the Multiplex one of if not the best sports complexes in Northern Alberta.
The five ball diamonds and three soccer fields that are a part of the plan are sure to be busy as soon as they open, with the aforementioned local organizations moving right in and hosting many of their practices and games at a convenient, central location. Those games, as well as tournaments and other events will keep the Multiplex hopping all through the year.
Everyone knows a strong community must have a multitude of recreational facilities and options for its residents, and Athabascans haven’t been left wanting in that regard.
But the creation of this new sports park will create even more opportunities for today’s generation, as well as those yet to come, to get active, be healthy and have fun right in their hometown.
