Spring? Is that you?

The birds are chirping and the very tall piles of snow around town are beginning to melt. The sun is shining and the temperature is beginning to creep above zero for more than just one day at a time.

Could spring finally be here?

Easter has already come and gone, and with it the month of March. Of course there were many fun activities for children celebrating the holiday, such as Easter bunny hat making at the library, a Rock-n-Roll Easter event at the Barrhead Alliance Church, and an Easter egg hunt at Bethel Pentecostal Church, to name a few.

The sports that define a Canadian winter are also coming to an end. Curling wrapped up last week, as did figure skating for the most part. Many of the Barrhead hockey teams have finished their season as well, quite a few of them with high success.

Even Misty Ridge Ski Hill had its final skiers and snowboarders of the year over the weekend. Hundreds of winter sport lovers flocked to the hill to get in one last ride down the slope, before the hill closed their doors until next winter.

Many of us are probably welcoming April with open, wide-stretched arms.

This could mean green grass is not too far in the future. Buds may soon be appearing on the trees and in our flower beds. Barrhead is ready to break away from winter and burst with life.

Even the lines in the parking lots are starting to show through all that white stuff. Perhaps parking successfully won’t be a game of chance for much longer.

Though there’s a lot more to look forward too than nice weather that doesn’t require an uncomfortable amount of layers, it’s hard to think of anything else.

Goodbye heavy winter boots, snow scrapers, 15-minute car warm-ups. Farewell harsh frigid winds, treacherous icy sidewalks. Good riddance late sunrise and early sunset.

Here’s hoping there will be more April showers than April flurries.
