Dear Editor,
A simple and inexpensive stop sign, located at the intersection of 57th Ave and 46 St (Rodeo Drive) is not an extreme, impractical, or drastic measure concerning the safety of Barrhead citizens. Instead it becomes a long needed positive, pro-active step forward from past indecisive determination regarding Rodeo Drive. The existence of which has been long shrouded in controversy. Upgrades to this roadbed have been stalled because there are those that would have this roadway closed. 46 Street is listed on future plans of expansion to the Town of Barrhead, as an arterial roadway with the purpose of connecting the Fire Hall with the eastern side of Barrhead, yet this arterial is already restricted by an existing stop sign. The only reason for the existence of Rodeo Drive is a short cut through town, yet 61 and 62 Avenues can serve this purpose. You just have to go by the RCMP headquarters, which some marauders may not like. This road has long allowed unlawful access by fully loaded trucks that damage and for unscrupulous impaired drivers to short cut through town. I have personally witnesses these fools stuck in the snowed ditch along this roadway.
We are told there are plans to close the road, and possibly extend the existing swimming pool onto the roadway, and then along comes the grader and digs it up again. There is a very cute little two year old girl living on this corner, who does not understand all these controversies that govern this roadway, she simply wants to visit her friends on the other side. The City of Edmonton takes incentive and posts community speed limits of 40 km/hr in residential areas. Since this roadway passes between both the community sports grounds and the public Rodeo grounds, frequented by unsupervised children, perhaps a similar responsible solution is needed here. The point is, since the good citizens of Barrhead have chosen to become vocal now, it is then time to make a decision and move forward towards a positive.
