Over the past few months, I have taken a work experience student under my wing.
Some of you may have seen her tagging along at a few events, and constantly asking me questions.
When I first agreed to take on a student, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.
Having Selena around kept reminding me of how eager I was during my internship at the Owen Sound Sun Times, a daily paper in my hometown.
It brought back the memory of seeing my first photo on the cover, and the overwhelming sense of pride when I had both cover photo and story.
I guess a part of me saw that hope in Selena, hence why I took her on, even if it was only for an hour or two a week.
I did my best to get her published, and worked alongside her while she learned the ropes of writing columns, taking photos, and interviewing,
She may not have had long, but I feel like I did my best to teach her what I could, and encourage her to continue to pursue her dream.
Selena was always asking me questions, like what I took in school, what I learned, and why I decided to become a journalist.
When discussing these topics with her, it only reminded me of my journey and why I chose to become a photojournalist in the first place.
If it wasn’t for my love of photography, then it was definitely my love of writing, or was it my love for the community?
Whatever it was, I have to thank Selena for reminding me what an amazing journey I have had, and for dusting off some memories that had passed me by.
Before polishing off her final week, Selena thanked me for allowing her the opportunity, but really I should be thanking her for rising to the challenge.
Keep an eye out for her closing column, which is currently in the works, after she finishes her studying of course!
Moving forward I hope Selena continues to work toward whatever career she chooses, and if it does just so happen to be journalism, then I hope I taught her a thing or two about the business, and what it means to be a respectful, honest, and community loving writer.
I hope she remembers why we do what we do, it’s simply because we love it.
Good luck Selena, in all your future endeavors.
