My name is Selena and I am interested in pursuing communication arts, which could lead to a career in journalism or media broadcasting.
To verify my current choice of pursuing a career in communication arts, I decided to take advantage of work experience in my Grade 11 year and learn as much as I can from working in a place that embodies my future interests at the Barrhead Leader. I want to learn how information is accumulated, the proper way to conduct interviews, what happens in editing, and what it takes to have different forms of news published.
Classmates always tell me to speak on behalf of the group in class discussions or presentations at school. The deliberation and exchange of opinions has become something I have taken significant interest in, helping me realize that not everything is black and white. I find it interesting that every single one of us has a different story to tell, but can still be empathetic to the stories of other people. We are all different as far as individual experiences go, but after we get past that, the feelings we take from them are relatable.
Media and journalism are more than just writing and reporting, but rather serve the purpose of informing people of issues, events, and entertainment. I personally take interest in the entertainment sector, more so after my obsession with ET and ET Canada surfaced in Grade 8. I created Selena Newz to aid my preteen presenter dilemma. Ever since that imaginary news show, schoolwork became structured and news themed.
In recent months, university has become a prominent topic in my life. I used to remain torn between the arts programs and science programs. I hear of people who transfer programs halfway through their university studies because of discontent. I don’t want to do the same. My time with the Leader will help me decipher between my future choices, and will help me choose the correct one. If I do decide to pursue a career in media or the entertainment business, now is the chance for me to learn the ethics and principles of developing stories so that I can utilize these skills later on.
Meagan Pecjak, a reporter for the Barrhead Leader, has kindly taken me under her wing to mentor me throughout all these aspects, allowing me to experience work from a reporter’s perspective. I want to thank her immensely for this great opportunity, and for patiently answering all of my many questions that I’m sure won’t run out anytime soon.
Who knows, media studies may not be my program of choice, but I’ve got nothing to lose and so much to gain.
