In 2007, my family and I took a trip to Beijing, China. It was a very interesting experience for us. Their food is so different than ours. Instead of eating just part of the chicken, they eat the whole thing. Well they don’t eat the combs or the feet, but they chew on them, it’s kind of cool.
The Great Wall of China is very interesting. It is very long to walk; no one could walk the whole thing. My family and I just walked a little bit of it, and even that amount is long and tiring. I would do it again though, it’s a great workout. Did you know that the Chinese built the Great Wall to keep invaders out of China? It’s a very interesting fact that I learnt while I was there.
They have a lot of markets. If we were to go back I’d totally shop there again. It’s actually quite fun! When we went shopping at one of the markets, my mom was trying to find some panda bear earrings for my grandma. So my mom went into one of the shops and asked for panda bear earrings. The person had no idea what she was talking about, so she got into full detail and acted out what a panda bear sounds like. She was standing there, she lifted her arms and made her fingers look like claws, and then all of a sudden she was like, “You know, a panda bear. RAWR!” And the guy in the store just started laughing at her. He went next door to get his buddy to come and watch this. My mom had to do it all over again, but then she said that the bear is black and white. Finally they knew what she was talking about, but they didn’t have any earrings that she wanted. Apparently panda bears are called bear cats in China. I guess you learn something knew everyday.
The reason we went to China is because my uncle lives there. He told us that if we were bad we would have a weird week. That is when we have to eat really weird food, like deep fried baby birds. Me and my brother weren’t bad the whole time we were there. My parents tried some weird food though. My dad ate an egg, he thought is was just a duck egg because it was black. He ate it and said that it tasted like a normal egg, so my mom tried it and she almost spit it out. My uncle told them that it wasn’t a duck egg. It was a 100 year old egg. My mom was disgusted. My dad asked if I wanted to try it and I said no right away.
We went to this building, and that is where they made silk blankets and stuff like that. We help stretch the silk and make a blanket. It was sort of cool. We also got to take home some silk cocoons with the larvae still in them, but they were dead, not alive. If they were alive I probably wouldn’t have taken them home with me.
That was probably the most interesting three weeks of my life. I learned a lot of new and interesting things, met new people, and did amazing things like walk on the Great Wall. Like how many people can say that they have walked on the Great Wall?
