Times are tough but paying to cover an event is silly

Rodeos are probably one of the best sports in Alberta. They are organized and run by some of the hardest working volunteers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and talking to.

Rodeos are probably one of the best sports in Alberta.

They are organized and run by some of the hardest working volunteers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and talking to.

Unfortunately, if what I heard is true during the Fort Assiniboine rodeo, it is a bit of a shame that vital services such as the fire department and emergency services are required to pay admission — never mind the fact that reporters have to as well.

While I agree that the vast majority of people who attend ought to pony up the dough, there are a few who shouldn’t have to.

I certainly mean no disrespect, but it sticks in my craw a little bit to have to pay to gain entry myself — I’m not there as a spectator regardless of what one might think.

If I didn’t bring a camera and my credentials, I would be the first to admit there might be reason for suspicion.

As it is however, my eyes are glued to the viewfinder in-between bouts of furious writing as I struggle to get names, scores and other vital bits of information down.

I understand times are tough on everyone though, so I won’t whine too loudly.

But what I think needs to be addressed here is that vital services, as well as folks such as myself who are at these events in a promotional capacity, should not have to pay to get into the events we are covering.

It is an opinion, and one I am entitled to.

Imagine if a real emergency happened and emergency medical personnel weren’t there because they did not bring that little bit of extra money to cover admission?

Imagine if there was a fire on the premises and the firefighters weren’t there?

Again, I realize times are tough, but it definitely bothers me to hear that those services are required to pay.

I know if I didn’t attend these events, the organizers would be among the first to call the office and complain that they weren’t covered.

Without the support of vital services such as the fire department and emergency services, I doubt these events could even be held legally, but I’m not 100% sure so don’t quote me on that.

Without coverage from the local newspaper however, I’m pretty sure organizers would be frustrated at the lower turnout as well.
