We need a pool we can afford

Dear Editor,

At a time of global insolvency, where numerous countries and jointed economies are fighting to stay one step ahead of bankruptcy! Where even the U.S. had to send home their employees for days at a time! Where my renowned local realtor warned me to liquidate my debt as quick as I can because there is turmoil blowing in the wind! Where the Tories of Alberta have stated there is no more funding beyond sustainability and their own caucus is now position-scrambling in lieu of the upcoming election; now is not the time to become indebted by long term financing.

Unfortunately, because Barrhead does indeed need a human habitable working pool, I think we need some alternative solutions pointing towards functionality instead of glitz and glamour, because the last pool was not a money maker and relied upon subsidy to stay afloat. Secondly, using cost saving local contractor volunteerism is not such a good idea. We were witness, not that long ago, to these results involving a local pork plant. Seems to me that this could be the cause as to why the last pool became uninhabitable. Careful here because desperation breeds contempt, and rushed results usually end in failure. If the town were to utilize a major potion of its $4.2 million in reserves and risk 50 per cent of its debt limit, then what can we rely upon if an environmental disaster should occur? Should we stall common maintenance issues for the next 25 years or just keep raising taxes?

We need to do something else because it feels like we are caught between a rock and a hard place. We need responsibility here, not desperation.

Sincerely, W. Krechuniak
