If you read our special Seniors Week coverage (“Mary Olson’s music teaching spans generations” and “Plenty planned at Boyle Seniors Drop-In Centre this week” in the June 3 issue of the Advocate), one thing will become eminently clear: we could all take a page out of the book of many seniors in our community.

Not only have the seniors we’ve spoken with given back to their communities no matter the personal inconvenience; they’ve also learned how to lobby for what they need in the community. Boyle seniors are well on their way to a new drop-in centre thanks largely to the efforts of a tireless group that simply set out to get the thing done.

As much as Seniors Week is about honouring the silver-haired leaders in our towns and villages, it should also give us pause. Do we cultivate the resolve, consideration and work ethic in our children that we see in our grandparents? If not, how can we? The week is not only about what seniors have given; it’s about what have left to gain from their example.
