White Barrhead

The white stuff finally settled over Barrhead this weekend. After several unconvincing flurries in recent weeks, the real deal has arrived, two months earlier than last year.

The white stuff finally settled over Barrhead this weekend.

After several unconvincing flurries in recent weeks, the real deal has arrived, two months earlier than last year.

So we are back to those familiar mornings, wielding scrapers with numb fingers, clearing windscreens and car doors. We are back to familiar sights of residents and business folk shovelling snow from outside properties, of people rushing about in scarves and mittens, and being a little more cautious about where they step.

But before we get too gloomy about putting winter boots on standby, we can cheer ourselves with some heart-warming thoughts.

The two months before Christmas are always packed with excitement as people get into the festive spirit – earlier and earlier each year, or so it seems.

There is so much to look forward to, starting with Halloween tomorrow and the Pumpkin Walk, traditionally one of the biggest events in Barrhead’s calendar.

Then on Nov. 16 the town will be brimming with holiday cheer for the Christmas Light-up.

Oh, and let’s not forget Fort Assiniboine’s annual “Journey to Bethlehem” nativity drama takes place on Nov. 17-18 and 24-25. After that the Barrhead and District Chamber of Commerce holds its Christmas Market and Craft Sale on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, before the weekend culminates in the Fundraising Gala and Charity Auction.

There are also two Barrhead Arts Council shows in November – the Jesse Peters Trio and Jake’s Gift.

That’s some November to enjoy, with or without snow.
