Dear Editor,
In her letter, Kory Kopf has made several points that I would like to address:
1. Kopf stated that what is in the womb is not a human being, but rather a mass. Jennifer Otten, however, very beautifully showed that to be untrue; that what is developing is actually a real human being.
2. Kopf said women considering abortion are not malicious, murderous people. I agree. It must indeed be incredibly difficult and frightening for many women to find out that they are expecting a baby under, often, very difficult circumstances. These women need a lot of support and love. Killing the baby however, will only complicate an already very unhappy and difficult situation. Generally the expectant mothers are victims of malicious, murderous abortionists for whom this is a multi-billion dollar industry.
3. Kopf stated that pro-life cedes its involvement as soon as a woman agrees to carry a fetus to term. She should have a look on the internet. She’ll see; A Door of Hope, Birthright International, Mom’s Home, Lifecall, Pro-life America to mention just a few. There are lots more besides that.
4. Kopf sarcastically suggested programs should perhaps be put in place to ensure pregnant women are eating healthy food and measures should be implemented to ensure the fetus is not subject to stress. Think it through Kory, such programs are already in place by exactly the same healthcare system that is also willing to tear these same babies apart limb by limb. Go to any hospital and you’ll see signs with information on how expectant mothers should take care of themselves and the baby.
5. Kopf tries to show that abortion isn’t harmful to women. There are many documented cases of women who have ended up with serious internal bleeding, some of which have died. Many post-abortion women are unable to have children later and have serious emotional and psychological problems. Kopf should read Denise Mountenay’s letter with an open mind and she’ll be able to read of her hurt.
6. Kopf stated that a baby should be wanted, loved and planned for and that every woman should have the right to choose if she wants a baby or not. She’s absolutely right. That right, however, should not be to kill another human being, rather it should be the prevention of a pregnancy.
7. According to Kopf the measure of humanity is when the baby experiences the world in the first person rather than as the third party. This can only lead to further social complexities. Peter Singer says that rationality, autonomy and self-consciousness are essential characteristics of personhood. Using this argument he states that it’s perfectly alright to kill children after they were born too.
A judge in Canada already gave a very light sentence to a young woman who murdered her baby after it was born. In giving the sentence he made the point that there wasn’t much difference between what she did and having an abortion. The judge was right and it’s precisely because of these problems that we as a society must say no to abortion.
So what are the inevitable consequences of abortion? The destruction of our society. Given time the Peter Singers of this world will have their way. We’ll continue to abort our unborn babies discarding them on our garbage heaps just as they did in the Roman Empire. Then we’ll continue with the “right” to die movement from which we already hear so much and eventually we will murder the sick and elderly, people considered to be of no value to society anymore.
Then? In time our society of death will begin deciding which other people are worthy of living and which are not, just as the Nazis did in the 1930’s and 40’s. Because they were considered to be sub-human and unworthy of living Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally and physically handicapped and ultimately anyone who got in their way were murdered and unceremoniously thrown on the garbage heap of the unwanted. Instead of doing this, let’s respect the value of the life of every human being and put an end to this hideous thing called abortion!
