Will we keep the rodeo?

It’s almost here...more nail-biting, dirt-flying, top-notch action. That’s right folks, the Wildrose Rodeo speeds into town this weekend, and is sure to give a great show as it does every year.

It’s no secret our small but vibrant town has been home to the Wildrose Rodeo for quite some time now, since 1986 in fact. The event doesn’t only draw local spectators, but rodeo lovers from out of town as well. Even with the loss of the dance last year, numbers seemed to increase.

But will this be Barrhead’s last year as host? Will Barrhead keep the rodeo, or will it ride off into the sunset and go to our Whitecourt or Drayton Valley neighbours? Eager fans will have to wait until the rodeo rides into town for the grand announcement. A bid has officially been submitted, but for now we can only cross our fingers and hope the rodeo stays in town.

Though Barrhead is unlikely (we hope) to lose the rodeo considering the successful bidding track record, one thing will be different next year. Longtime Ag Society president Adolph Bablitz is retiring from his position after a successful 20 plus years.

He won’t be entirely out of the picture though, as Bablitz plans to stay on as an advisor. Even so, our hats off to him for helping make the rodeo what it is today.
