Dear Editor,
My nose is wet, I’m very cute and I have puppy breath. A lot of people will want me now, but in six months I won’t be so cute anymore. I will be a teenager and somewhat reckless, I may wreck some of your stuff and pee on the carpet. Also, I will need shots. Puppy parvo is often fatal and very preventable. If I am male, I will start going to the neighbors looking for a girlfriend, sometimes I will be met with a rifle. If I am a female, I will likely become pregnant, perhaps not with your choice of sire. In February, coyotes have their annual breeding. I may get bred by a coyote and produce coy-dogs. Some puppies are wanted and bring high prices. Many are unwanted. There are large litters of mixed breed puppies that people will take when we are small and cute, only to later abandon us to shelters or to leave us attached to a chain to become angry.
So please, as human beings, act responsibly in your choice of ownership of a puppy or kitten. Are you committed to caring for me for my life span, getting my shots and having me spayed or neutered? I cannot take care of my needs myself. I chose you just as much as you chose me. Please think hard when you look into my eyes. Are you a forever friend? I’m prepared to be yours!
Becky Berube,
On behalf of our four legged friends who can’t speak.
