The Town of Barrhead has decided to go ahead with the demolition of the old aquatic centre.
This could arguably be the worst time to start this project as the two biggest events of the year are rapidly approaching. The first event is Kraft Celebration Tour and it is just over two weeks away. By the time contracts are signed and construction crews are on site, the demolition process will start just as TSN and Kraft are arriving as well.
The Kraft Celebration Tour visit is a huge honour the Town and its Curling Club received and now they will have to compete with construction crews and the tearing down of a decrepit, old building. It has been said that the demolition won’t be a problem because the TSN telecast will not be done by the curling rink unless weather conditions dictate that it has to be. Who wants to take that risk?
Sue Keenan, Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Barrhead, has said it will have no impact on the Kraft Celebration Tour but that is difficult to say. There are a number of different factors that could lead to the demolition’s impact the Kraft visit.
The other big event is the Wildrose Rodeo Finals, which run from September 18-21 and they are in the Agrena itself. Now, the one positive for this event is that the demolition process is scheduled to come to an end around this time but what if they encounter delays and the process goes longer than anticipated.
These should have all been legitimate concerns for the Town and the best part about all of this is we don’t even have a new pool to put in its place. If we had a new pool ready to go, it may have been an easier pill to swallow. Let’s hope the demolition process doesn’t hinder what promises to be two outstanding events for the Town of Barrhead.
