Year-round remembrance

Remembrance Day is fast approaching, and while it’s important to mark the day, it is also important to consider how we are supporting our veterans year-round. One way of extending support is through involvement in the local Legion branches.

Remembrance Day is fast approaching, and while it’s important to mark the day, it is also important to consider how we are supporting our veterans year-round.

One way of extending support is through involvement in the local Legion branches.

Both the Boyle and Athabasca Legions have acknowledged that membership is declining, even as the branches try to do more for their communities. The Athabasca Legion is in full-fledged membership drive mode and has made every effort to prove it is not a relic, but a relevant organization. From pub quizzes to hospital equipment purchases, the Legion is much more than a spot to have a drink and swap stories — though that is an important function as well.

When you attend a Remembrance Day ceremony this year, take a moment to consider who has organized the logistics and prepared the luncheon. Consider not just the sacrifice of soldiers years ago, but the continued sacrifices, large and small, that Legion members make today.
